You Didn’t Overreact—You Reacted Too Fast

You know the moment.

The email hits.

The comment lands wrong.

The meeting shifts—and suddenly you’re off.

Your body tightens.

Your tone changes.

You respond… and immediately feel it.

That wasn’t it.

This isn't a communication problem:

It’s a reaction problem.

Because in that split second,

you’re not choosing your response—

you’re running a pattern.

Defend.

Shut down.

Get sharp.

Get quiet.

You are not being difficult—

your system is trying to protect you.

Here’s what most people miss:

It’s not the situationthat

that creates the damage.

It’s the speed

of your reaction to it.

I see this all the time:

Smart, capable people—

good intentions, strong leaders—

derailing a moment

they actually care about.

Not because they don’t know better…

but because they didn’t pause long enough

to do better.

Emotional intelligence isn’t about being calm all the time.

It’s about catching yourself

before you turn a moment into a pattern.

That space—

between what happens

and what you do next—

That’s where everything shifts.

So instead of asking,

“Why did they do that?”

Try this:

“What just got triggered in me…

and do I want to lead from that?”

You don’t need a perfect response.

You need a pause.

A breath.

A beat.

A second to choose.

Because the difference between

a reaction and a response…

is the difference between

damage and direction.

Your STRETCH:

Next time you feel it rising—

don’t speak first.

Pause long enough

to decide who you want to be in that moment.
